Some Remarks about Connectionism in Psychological Simulation

چکیده

This paper considers the question of whether the connectionist approach is an appropriate p a r a d . for the construction of simuiation modeis of psychologicai processes. The strengest connectionist dah is that psychological properties simply emerge from interactions among the units of a netwark; meaningfd features are distributed in these units, which therefore are not representions of anything. The problern is then: how such a system can descriie a psychological system and be relevant to explain it ? It is suggested that the psychological relevante of comectionist descriptions should not be rejected on the grounds that they are limited to a hardware-iike or implementational level. Connectionist descxiptions would be best considered as different scientific "objects", cunstructed from the same pre-scientific "facts*. As different objects they need not be at different levels of generality or abstraction and the translation of one representation into another is unnecessary. As to the explanatory power of connectionist modeis, it is claimed that it wnnot come from the interaction among units, if this interaction is invoked at the same time to give the model a psychologicai nature. Neither can the expianatory power come from the fact that comectionist modeis produce phenomena similar to human psychologicd processes, since ehis sixnüarity should refer explicitly to features that have already been accepted independentiy as psychological The claim that co~ectionist anaiysis is psychologically relevant at a subsymbolic level is eventuaily considered. There is a possible confusion in this claim. sub-symbolic models may be non-symbolic as to their object but they must be symbolic as models. A non-symbolic model simply wodd not be a model, since by dejinition it must represent something. Sub-symboiic models, however, may be non-symbolic in the sense that there are no symbols in the modelled reality. In thic regard, comectionist Systems seem to help in overcoming the idea encouraged by current Ai and Cognitive Science that any psychologicai process should be considered as made out of symbols. SOME REMARKS ON GENERALIZATIONS OF MULTIPLICATIVELY CLOSED SUBSETS

Let R be a commutative ring with identity and Mbe a unitary R-module. In this paper we generalize the conceptmultiplicatively closed subset of R and we study some propertiesof these genaralized subsets of M. Among the many results in thispaper, we generalize some well-known theorems about multiplicativelyclosed subsets of R to these generalized subsets of M. Alsowe show that some other well-kno...

SOME REMARKS ON ALMOST UNISERIAL RINGS AND MODULES

In this paper we study almost uniserial rings and modules. An R−module M is called almost uniserial if any two nonisomorphic submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion. A ring R is an almost left uniserial ring if R_R is almost uniserial. We give some necessary and sufficient condition for an Artinian ring to be almost left uniserial.

Connectionism Reconsidered: Minds, Machines and Models

In this paper the issue of drawing inferences about biological cognitive systems on the basis of connectionist simulations is addressed. In particular, the justification of inferences based on connectionist models trained using the backpropagation learning algorithm is examined. First it is noted that a justification commonly found in the philosophical literature is inapplicable. Then some gene...

Some remarks on generalizations of classical prime submodules

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $M$ be a unitary $R$-module. Suppose that $phi:S(M)rightarrow S(M)cup lbraceemptysetrbrace$ be a function where $S(M)$ is the set of all submodules of $M$. A proper submodule $N$ of $M$ is called an $(n-1, n)$-$phi$-classical prime submodule, if whenever $r_{1},ldots,r_{n-1}in R$ and $min M$ with $r_{1}ldots r_{n-1}min Nsetminusphi(N)$, then $r_{1...

SOME REMARKS ON WEAKLY INVERTIBLE FUNCTIONS IN THE UNIT BALL AND POLYDISK

We will present an approach to deal with a problem of existence of (not) weakly invertible functions in various spaces of analytic functions in the unit ball and polydisk based on estimates for integral operators acting between functional classes of different dimensions.
